This week’s prompt is super interesting since I often forget how important opening lines are for books! It’s your first introduction to a story, an author and often times a world. So for this week I’m going with top 5 opening lines from books I’ve read this year!
“The king had never known the warm kiss of the sun.” – Katlyn Davis, The Raven and the Dove
I enjoyed this YA fantasy and the opening line spurred so many questions for me. Who’s the king? Why has he never known sunlight? Is he underground? Why? lol
“You’d think someone who wanted to study the stars would know better than to wish on them.” – Ronni Davis, When the Stars Lead to You
One of the most heart-wrenching books I’ve read one the topic of Mental Health this year! This book is filled with difficult topics. However, the first line made me think of summer starry nights and romance.
“The future is the one thing you can count on not abandoning you kid.” he’d said. “The future always finds you. Stand still and it will find you.” – Rebecca Serle, In Five Years
Focusing on the future is how I’ve lived most of my life, therefore the future was always stressful lol. This was a definite unexpected reads this year. I went into it with specific ideas of the storyline and finished it with so many emotions.
“The whole thing was a fucking disaster.” – Jenny Lee, Anna K: A Love Story
Never has an opening liner proved to be so true for me. I’ve never read Anna Karenina, the classic by Leo Tolstoy, which this is a retelling of. But, I have so many emotions regarding this book. Ultimately, I felt like I was on the worst whirl-a-wind ride after finishing it. I did rate it three palm leaves out of 5. Mostly because I really enjoyed the writing style and the author’s note gave me some insight into her writing process.
“I have a fatal flaw.” – Emily Henry, Beach Read
Girl, you and me both lol! In fact, I have a few fatal flaws. I loved this opening liner. I immediately felt connected to the main character, January after reading it. Beach Read is one of my favorite reads so far this year and I highly recommend checking it out!
And there you have it, some of my top 5 opening lines this year! Do you like any of these? Or have you read any of the books on my list? Let me know in the comments down below.
