Synopsis- Goodreads

Marlee thought she scored the man of her dreams only to be scorched by a bad breakup. But there’s a new player on the horizon, and he’s in a league of his own…

Marlee Harper is the perfect girlfriend. She’s definitely had enough practice by dating her NFL-star boyfriend for the last ten years. But when she discovers he has been tackling other women on the sly, she vows to never date an athlete again. There’s just one problem: Gavin Pope, the new hotshot quarterback and a fling from the past, has Marlee in his sights.

Gavin fights to show Marlee he’s nothing like her ex. Unfortunately, not everyone is ready to let her escape her past. The team’s wives, who never led the welcome wagon, are not happy with Marlee’s return. They have only one thing on their minds: taking her down. But when the gossip makes Marlee public enemy number one, she worries about more than just her reputation.

Between their own fumbles and the wicked wives, it will take a Hail Mary for Marlee and Gavin’s relationship to survive the season.

If you happen to follow me on bookstagram, you already have access to my complete gushing over this book for the last few days. And I mean few! I literally started the book on the 1st of May and only because of other responsibilities forcing me to do other important things, did I actually put the book down and finish it yesterday, on the fourth (Happy Cinco de Mayo!)

So I’m going to attempt to give you all a well thought out review of this book with as much non-spoilery details as I can.

Here we go.

First and foremost, it’s a sports romance. And although I loved watching The Game back in the day, I never really got into sports romance books over the past few years. However, with this series? trilogy? I’ll get back to you on that! What was I saying? Right— because of this book, I think i might take a nose dive into more sports-y books because this one has completely stolen my heart.

Our main character, Marlee Harper is no stranger to the game since she’s been dating her wide receiver boyfriend, Chris Alexander for almost eleven years. However she can’t seem to forget an unforgettable night she had four years ago, while she and said boyfriend were on a break, with superstar quarterback Gavin Pope. Who, if you guessed it, ends up getting traded over to the Denver Mustangs, the team Chris Alexander plays for, and runs smack dab into Marlee for the first time after their rendezvous all those nights ago.

And boom, we follow their story!

So, I’m just going to put it out there, Gavin Pope is the best man I’ve ever not met! He is everything and more wrapped up in a deliciously hot package. But what I really love, is that he’s not perfect! And the first half of the book doesn’t really let you know it (because you know, contemporary romance equals perfect hot guy a lot of the times) but man oh man that second half lets you have it!

I also love Marlee! She’s a witty bad ass in her own right (and sometimes just in her mind) but she’s completely relatable. To anyone who’s in their mid-late twenties, still trying to figure out themselves and their career and occasionally falls into the comfortability of a bad relationship because its what they’re used to then I hate to break it to you my friends but you are Marlee. However, reading her development and watching her go from a toxic situation to a beautiful head over heels romance to understanding what she needs for herself was thrilling, heart-breaking and ultimately liberating to read.

If you noticed, I haven’t mentioned the scum bag Chris Alexander much. Because seriously all I have to say is FUCK HIM!! (Glad I finally got to get that out)

I will say, the inclusion of hashtags throughout the story, after a while, were pretty annoying. #IGetitGirlButStopNow

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I cant wait to move on to the second book, Fumbled (I checked looks like it’ll be a trilogy) really soon! I’m going to keep it simple and recommend this to anyone who happens to be a fan of American football and a well-rounded romance with an added bonus of great friendships that keeps you on your toes and makes you believe in love again!
